If you have an immediate family member with a serious health condition that needs you to take care of them, you may be eligible for a leave of absence under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA).
Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
Family Medical Leave is unpaid leave that provides job protection for up to 12 weeks for your own serious health condition or to provide care for an immediate family member with a serious health condition.

Preparing for your time-off
Initiate a Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) claim with Sun Life at 888.444.0239 within 7 days of your need to take leave due to an immediate family member’s injury/illness.
Sun Life will send you a FMLA packet to be completed by your family member’s healthcare provider and returned to Sun Life. Be sure to submit the required documentation by the due date or your claim may be denied.
Use Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Resources
Caring for a sick loved one can be an emotional and stressful time for a family. You and your eligible dependents have access to a variety of resources through Powell’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) administered by ComPsych. You can contact the EAP at 877-595-5281 to take advantage of the 3 face-to-face counseling sessions or view available resources through the EAP website, www.guidanceresources.com.
